Cooking with Kids: Homemade bread 17

My youngest (#3Son), who is 10-years-old, is my PICKIEST EATER. He is not a fan of vegetables. He loves tan food and pizza. Cherry tomatoes make him throw up–you can read more about this HERE. So, of course when I asked him what he wanted to be when he grows up, he replied, “If I’m not going to be a pro soccer player, I want to be a chef.”

WHAT???!!!

He baffles me, but he is firm on eventually working with food. Not only does he watch gaming and sports videos on You Tube, but he also watches cooking videos. This summer, he came to me and said he needed some yeast because he was going to make bread. I asked him if he had a recipe. He said, “Yes. Stephen Curry, you know the pro basketball player, well his wife, Aeysha Curry, has a You Tube channel called Little Lights of Mine. I watched her video and I want to make her homemade bread.”

“Well, okay then. I guess I’ll go get some yeast.”

This is how this new series, Cooking with Kids, started. What’s great about this recipe is it’s EASY and kid approved. We set up #3Son’s iPad and watched Aeysha’s video as we made the bread together, which I highly recommend you do too. I had no idea making bread could be so simple…and don’t get me started on how good it tasted! It made the whole house smell delicious. That one loaf of homemade bread didn’t even make it a couple of hours before my whole family devoured it. Take note, make two loaves if you want some for later.

I had a blast cooking, or in this case, baking with #3Son. He got out most of the ingredients and then we divided up tasks. He mixed the ingredients (with some help from me) and he kneaded the dough while I stretched it out and twisted it into the pan. Always supervise your kids when using the stove, oven, knives and kitchen appliances. Also, don’t forget to have your kids help clean up! That is all apart of the experience. Have fun!
